Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery

Search Underwood Washington

The hatchery is located about 62 miles east of Vancouver and 4 miles west of White Salmon on the north shore of the Columbia River off Highway 14. Established in 1901, the hatchery rears more than 15 million Tule Fall Chinook salmon annually.

Until the Bonneville Dam was built, chinook salmon spawned in this area of the Columbia River. The hatchery concentrates on capturing these large returning chinook salmon in the fall, taking their eggs, and rearing millions of fingerlings for release in the spring.

The visitor center provides hatchery history and the science of salmon. September is the best time to visit to see the large chinook salmon in the holding ponds and to see the egg stripping operation. Environmental education tours are offered upon request.
