Steilacoom, founded in 1854, was the state's second oldest incorporated town as well as the site of the state's first library, courthouse and territorial jail. The town is a National Historic District, and has 32 buildings and sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Steilacoom faces Puget Sound from its location south of Tacoma in Pierce County. Steilacoom is part of the Tacoma, WA metro area.
