Founded in 1845, Tumwater was the first American settlement north of Fort Vancouver. Water power from the Deschutes River for a brewery, mills and other industry were the main reasons for the town's prosperity during the early 1900's. Tumwater is at the southern tip of Puget Sound in Thurston County. It is well known as the home of Olympia Beer, whose brewery - Miller Brewing Company is easily visible from Interstate 5. Tumwater is part of the Olympia, WA metro area.
