The University of Washington was originally located in downtown Seattle, but was moved to its present campus near Lake Washington in the 1890s to take over the site of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.

The University has earned a reputation an international reputation for its research and graduate programs.It is the largest institution of higher education in the Pacific Northwest, with campuses in Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma.
