Founded in 1883 as New Whatcom State Normal School, the institution achieved university status in 1977.
It is organized as a graduate school and six colleges. In addition to the Bellingham campus, the university offers a variety of programs through centers in Seattle, Everett, Bremerton, Oak Harbor, and Port Angeles.
