The University of Washington's Department of Sociology offers graduate and under graduate programs. Current faculty members are engaged in three basic types of research activities - to discover new empirical facts, imputation of causal mechanisms, and the systematic and rigorous testing of general theories. Research is carried on both within the department and under the auspices of a number of interdisciplinary centers. Strengths of the department include demography and ecology, deviance and social control, family and kinship, institutional analysis, sociology of gender and sexuality, and theory.
