Klickitat County follows the Columbia River from the towns of
White Salmon and
Bingen for almost a hundred miles upstream. The main highway traffic along the Columbia follows the Oregon side, where Interstate 84 is located. The western end of the county is included in the
Columbia River Gorge Natl Scenic Area.
Highway 97 cuts through the county north-south and passes through the county seat, Goldendale.
Between the western and eastern ends of the county, there is a climatic shift to very dry conditions typical of the Columbia Basin in Eastern Washington.
