Thurston County is located at the extreme southern end of
Puget Sound. Its county seat is
Olympia, also the state capital. Along with
Tumwater, the site of the first settlement, and
Lacey, this is the major population center.
Highway 101, also known as the Olympic Highway, leaves Olympia going northwest. Highway 8, the fast route to the coast, branches off westward a few miles out of town.
