Walla Walla County contains the earliest American settlements in Washington. The Whitman Mission was established to the west of the present-day city of Walla Walla, the county seat. The Walla Walla River Valley is a rich agricultural area. Within the Walla Walla urban area is College Place. Waitsburg is to the northeast on Highway 12.
