A New England Yankee named Anson Dart brought his family to the shores of what the French called Grand Lac Verde (Big Green Lake)in the early 1840s. He built a dam, sawmill and gristmill at the lake's outlet, and the village that grew up around them was platted as Dartford in 1847. The name wasn't officially changed to Green Lake until 1907, although it was in common usage long before then.
