Sparta is located in Monroe County (of which it is the county seat), between Viroqua and Black River Falls along Hwy 27 on the banks of the La Crosse River near Tomah, La Crosse, and West Salem.

The historical development of Sparta is seen in its architecture with buildings dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places are the Monroe County Courthouse, the Masonic Temple, and the Sparta Free Library, a Carnegie library. The City's downtown area is in the National Register as the Water Street Commercial Historic District. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 8,308, an increase of 520 since 1990.
