Stoughton is located in
Dane County between
Madison and
Janesville along US Hwy 51 on the banks of the Rock River near
Fitchburg,
Monona,
Edgerton,
Cambridge, and
Lake Kegonsa State Park.
Stoughton became one of the most Norwegian towns in the United States and in June 1986 Gjovik, Norway became its sister city. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 11,542, an increase of 2,756 since 1990.
Stoughton is part of the Madison, Wisconsin metro area.
