Counties in Wales

Search Visit

The geographic counties of Wales are Gwynedd, Clwyd, Powys, Dyfed, Glamorgan, and Gwent. The ancient shires remain important for historic and cultural reasons. The modern "county councils" are sometimes the same as the shires, sometimes combining several, and sometimes splitting a populous one. Occasionally the English spelling has been replaced with a Welsh name.
