Montgomeryshire is a county in Wales, bounded on the north and east by
Merionethshire and
Denbighshire, on the east by
Shropshire, on the south by
Radnorshire and
Cardiganshire. Its area is 797 square miles.
The county is a region of hills and mountains, with some valleys that have fertile alluvial soil. The principal rivers are the River Severn, the Dovey (whose valley opens out into Cardigan Bay), and the Vyrnwy. There are no large towns. Montgomery is the county town.
