Ansted was named by a New Haven group of New England Spiritualists and can be found in Fayette County (Southern Region).
It was orginally settled by Baptists in 1790, who came to the town in 1830. The following year it was renamed after British scientist David T. Ansted.
Interested English investors built coal-mining operations making the city burst with population.
A knoll overlooking the town is the Westlake Cemetery resting the grave of Julia Neale Jackson, General Thomas Stonewall Jackson's mother.
