Gauley Bridge

Gauley Bridge is found in Fayette County (Southern Region).

The city was the scene of heavy fighting during the Civil War. In 1861 the old bridge was destroyed during a Confederate retreat from the forces of Union General William Starke Rosecrans.
The city has the piers of the old bridge as a monument of the history of the city. When visiting the area it can still be seen upstream from the present bridge across the Gauley River.
