Inside Cabell County (Southern Region), Huntington is the second largest city in West Virginia which places it as part of the Huntington-Ashland metro area.

The city lies in a semicircle between low hills and the Ohio River. The area experiences all four seasons with brilliant displays of color during spring and fall, and moderate temperatures during summer and winter.
The city was founded in 1871 by Collis P. Huntington, who was then president of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. In 1884, the city experienced its first serious flood. The "Great Flood of 1937" prompted construction of the current flood wall. Today, 11 miles protect the city.
Huntington has become a busy industrial center and trans-shipping point. Among the products manufactured in the area are chemicals, clothing, glass and steel. Huntington also is home to a diverse ethnic community. The city is growing with many renovations, including the development of Pullman Square and the technology center, Kinetic Park.
