Marlinton was named after Jacob Marlin, one of its early settlers. The town is known as "the birthplace of rivers" because eight major rivers the Cheat, Cranberry, Elk, Greenbrier, Shaver's Fork, Williams, Tygart and the Gauley and its tributaries have their sources in the area. It also is a noted hunting area.

Marlinton marks an approximate halfway point along the scenic portion of Hwy 55, a scenic highway which run 86 miles. The town also lies midway along the 76 mile Greenbrier River Trail, a hiking, bicycling and cross-country skiing trail that runs between North Caldwell and Cass.

Marlinton is located in Pocahontas County (of which it is the county seat) along Highway 39.
