Nancy Hart, a Confederate spy, led an attack on Summersville in 1861. Hart escaped to Confederate lines but returned after Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender. US 19, a 45-mile scenic highway linking I-79 at Sutton and the West Virginia Turnpike at Bradley, passes Summersville near Summersville Lake.
The Gauley River National Recreation Area, between Summerville and Swiss, protects 25 miles of the Gauley River and 6 miles of its tributary, the Meadow River. The Gauley is known for its rapids, white-water rafting and fishing opportunities.
