Nancy Hart, a Confederate spy, led an attack on Summersville in 1861. Hart escaped to Confederate lines but returned after Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender. US 19, a 45-mile scenic highway linking I-79 at Sutton and the West Virginia Turnpike at Bradley, passes Summersville near Summersville Lake.The Gauley River National Recreation Area, between Summerville and Swiss, protects 25 miles of the Gauley River and 6 miles of its tributary, the Meadow River. The Gauley is known for its rapids, white-water rafting and fishing opportunities.
