Owl Creek and Castle Rocks

Search Visit Wyoming

Owl Creek and Castle Rocks contain many different wild areas, logical extensions of the Washakie Wilderness. Located in the Bighorn Basin, the site is known as Castle Rocks Chaos, for its topography, a jumble of debris from a long ago erupted volcano. The overall area is characterized by high elevation, ranging from 9,000 to nearly 11,000 feet. There is also a section of the area that is mainly alpine tundra, complete with windswept slopes and mountainous cliffs covered with patches of aspen and conifer. Two streams in the area are fisheries that are important resources for many different kinds of trout, including rainbow and brook trout and Yellowstone cutthroat. The area is also habitat for bighorn sheep, mule deer, and moose.
