Along the Bozeman Trail some of the most famous Indians have lived, including a young Lakota Warrior named Crazy Horse. In December of 1866, this warrior led an attack on Fetterman troops 15 miles north of present-day
Buffalo. Eighty cavalrymen lost their lives in the attack, which lasted a little under an hour. The theme of Bozeman Trail Days in current times is dedicated to the young Lakota warrior. The festival takes place at
Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site northwest of Buffalo off I-90.
The festival tours Sullivant Hills, site of the wood wagon road near where the Fetterman Troops, who were sent to rescue a besieged wagon train, were decoyed by the small band of Indians led by Crazy Horse. The troops, then led over Lodge Trail Ridge, were ambushed by over 2,000 Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors.
