Early Scottish settlers mistook the native elk for the red deer of their homeland and the name stuck. The original town was located upstream on the Red Deer River, but a local Methodist minister donated half of his land for use as a townsite, and persuaded the Edmonton Railway to cross the river on his property. When the trains started coming through, the town took root.
