Mountain Village lies on the north bank of the Yukon River, just 20 miles west of St. Mary's. Mountain Village was a summer fish camp until the early 1900s, when a post office was established, followed by a salmon saltery and cannery. Mountain Village became a regional education center in 1976 when it was selected as headquarters for the Lower Yukon School District.
Subsistence foods are relied heavily upon, including salmon, waterfowl, and moose.
