Napakiak is on the north bank of the Kuskokwim River, 15 miles from Bethel. Yup'ik Eskimos have lived in this region for thousands of years. The city is trying to relocated all facilities and homes due to severe erosion of the sandbar on which the village sits.

Subsistence actitivies provide about 50 percent of the local diet. Most families have fish camps nearby.
