Nuiqsut is in North Slope Borough on the Nechelik Channel, about 35 miles from the Beaufort Sea coast. Nuiqsut was one of three abandoned Inupiat villages, and was resettled in 1973 by several families from Barrow. The city was incorporated in 1975. Caribou, beluga whales, seals, moose, and fish are staples of the villagers' diet.

Air travel provides the only year-round access to Nuiqsut.
