Seven major oil companies formed the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company to build and operate the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, following the discovery of oil in Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope of the Arctic Circle. The 48-inch diameter pipeline begins in Prudhoe Bay and runs 800 miles to Valdez, the northernmost ice-free port in North America. There are 12 pump stations to push the oil over the Brooks Range past Fairbanks and over the Chugach Mountains. It proceeds to a marine terminal across the bay from where Valdez was rebuilt following a 1964 earthquake. Valdez Tour Co. conducts daily excursions around the terminal from May to September.
