Unimak Island is the biggest and easternmost of the Aleutian islands. It hosts several volcanoes, including Mt. Shishaldin, one of the most active volcanoes in the Aleutian volcanic arc and the hightest peak in the Aleutians.
At almost one million acres, Unimak Island extends west from the tip of the Alaska Peninsula. The island is separated by a thin strip of sea from Izembek National Wildlife Refuge. About 95 percent of the island has been designated wilderness.
