In the spring of 1864 the decision was made to move the Richmond Carbine Factory from Richmond to a more secure location in Tallassee. The factory soon occupied the 1844 cotton mill in Tallassee and began manufacturing cavalry carbines. The factory stands as the only Confederate armory to survive the Civil War.
