Confederate Memorial Park is the site of Alabama's only Confederate veterans home. The facility was in operation from 1902-1939 for the care of elderly veterans, wives of veterans and even the widows of veterans. The 102 acre park has two original cemeteries where more than three hundred residents of the veterans home are buried. A rustic Museum building houses artifacts from the "Old Soldiers Home", as well as an extensive collection of uniforms, weapons, equipment and other items associated with the Civil War. Additional facilities at the wooded park site include buildings that date from the veterans home period, pavilions for gatherings, picnic areas, nature trails and walking and driving tours. The Park is operated as an historic site recalling Alabama's concern for her Confederate veterans in their later years, and as a tribute to the legacy left by the Confederate soldier of bravery, devotion to duty and courage in the face of adversity.
