The formation of Wheeler Dam created the largest Tennessee River lake in North Alabama. Operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, the dam is over 72 feet high and 1 1/5 miles long. Recreational opportunities around the lake's shoreline include excellent fishing for smallmouth bass and other game fish, sailing and waterskiing. The Joe Wheeler State Park features lake front cabins, tennis courts and picnic areas, pavilions, tables and playgrounds.
