The Mizell Memorial Hospital in Opp was dedicated on December 8, 1949. Since it's opening there have been several additions to the original building. The Catherine Mizell Lyon Memorial wing opened in 1958 and by 1965 the hospital had grown to 76 beds. In 1969 ground was broken for a three-story tower which increased the total number of beds to 111. The third floor was left as a shell to be completed later in 1986 along with renovation of the ancillary departments. The hospital currently has 99 licensed beds.
Fred Lyon and other civic leaders, along with the Opp & Micolas Mills were responsible for raising the $500,000 in necessary funds for construction of the original building. Mizell Memorial was named for the late Charles Wesley Mizell who was a prominent textile manufacturer, banker, and businessman.
