Point Mallard is a sprawling 749 acre recreation park east of Decatur where flint creek flows into the Tennessee River. Its wave pool-(The first in the nation) draws thousands of swimmers and sunbathers daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Point Mallards aquatic center was developed in the early 1970's after Mayor Gilmer Blackburn saw enclosed "wave-making" swimming pools in Japan and thought one could be a tourist attraction in the U.S.Ohio manufacturer J. Austin Smith worked with the city to design and install the pool in 1970. it has been a popular attraction for north Alabama families ever since, with various water rides added. Between 130,000 180,000 visit each summer, making it one of the states most popular seasonal attractions.
