(of which it is the county seat) south of Star City
between Montongo and Lacey along Hwy 425 near the Saline River, Seven Devils Swamp and Cut-off Creek.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 8,316, an increase of 197 since 1990.
Popular attractions in the Monticello area include: Drew County Historical Museum, Monticello Confederate Monument, University of Arkansas at Monticello, Turner Neal Museum of Natural History, Lake Monticello (1,520-acre lake that is rapidly gaining a reputation as a trophy bass lake), and the Pomeroy Planetarium.
