Kaibab National Forest covers 1,556,432 acres in four districts north and south of Grand Canyon National Park. The portion north of the canyon includes Grand Canyon National Game Preserve, a thickly forested, domed limestone plateau. The north Kaibab Plateau is the only known home of the Kaibab squirrel, a dark gray squirrel with a white tail and tufted ears. The southern most of the four districts contains volcanic cones and scattered forest peaks. Big game animals can be seen in roadside meadows and throughout the forest.
