Peoria is located in Maricopa County on the western city limits of Phoenix along US Highway 60.

The City of Peoria was established in the 1880s. Residences in the new community sprang up, and a school and Post Office were established by 1889. Peoria was incorporated in 1954, with boundaries covering one square mile of land.

Currently, Peoria covers 162 square miles, and is Arizona's 4th largest city in terms of incorporated area, and 9th largest city in terms of population.

Peoria is one of the safest cities in the country. Since 1997, the crime rate has actually dropped, a pretty amazing feat considering the large increase in population. Peoria residents enjoy the advantages of many recreational opportunities, including fishing, skiing or sailing in Lake Pleasant or more than 200 golf courses in and around the city.

Peoria is part of the Phoenix-Mesa, Arizona metro area.
