Located at the confluence of the Morice and Bulkley Rivers, Houston's local volunteers built a 60-ft tall anodized aluminum rod as a tribute to the hundreds of fly-fishing enthusiasts who come here every year. With a population of 3,700, Houston offers not only wilderness country, but also golf, arts and crafts shops, motels, campgrounds, restaurants and service stations.
Established in the 1900's as a tie-cutting centre for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, Houston still depends on the forest industry (as well as tourism). Two of the largest, most efficient sawmills in the country are here, as well as guided forestry tours of the woods, offering a look at logging and reforestation operations.
