Most castles in Belgium are better classified as chateaus, as they are designed for good living rather than defense -- but not Beersel, which is a true fortress. With three ponderous watchtowers, and surrounded by a wide moat, it is difficult to imagine besieging this imposing 14th century structure, erected by Godfrey of Hallebeke as a base from which to defend Brussels. Fortunately for the modern tourist there are no armed defenders, so we can walk right in and admire the historically significant architecture and construction techniques.
