The central attraction of Bokrijk is an open air museum comprised of more than 100 buildings. The full Bokrijk estate is 1359 acres; the museum takes up 222. The buildings illustrate how Belgians of the past lived their lives. Some of the structures have been moved to Bokrijk from other locations, so that they might be more easily preserved and appreciated. Architecture and construction are given most of the attention -- some of the buildings have part of their exteriors cut away so that the underlying elements may be studied.
Bokrijk has several other attractions in addition to the museum. The central park has an enormous playground, sporting fields, mini golf, tennis courts, and a rose garden. The 25 acre Arboretum and the Botanical Gardens are highly regarded, as are the nature reserve and the deer area. A passenger train trundles visitors around from one part of the estate to another. Bokrijk is open seasonally.
