Mechelen, population 75,000, was founded on the Dijle River in ancient Roman times. The city's golden age was the 15th century regency of Margaret of Austria, who governed the Spanish lowlands from Mechelen in place of her nephew, the underage heir Emporer Charles V, until he came of age. Her palace now holds Mechelen's law courts, and she commissioned many other buildings during her reign. The principle monument of Mechelen is the imposing St. Rumboldts Tower and Cathedral.

Malines, Heffen, Hombeek, Leest, Muizen, and Walem are boroughs within the municipal district of Mechelen. (There is another Muizen within the municipality of Gingelom, in Limburg province.)
