Montauban is the site of ancient ruins, from prehistory, through the Roman era, through the Merovingian and Carolingian eras, and reaching into the Middle ages. In addition to the vestiges of various military installations, including a Carolingian keep that plays a role in the legend of the Steed Bayard, there is a Museum of Roman Sculpture at Montauban featuring bas reliefs.
