The history of Ooidonk Castle is similar to the history of many other Belgian castles: early military use; multiple sieges, wars, fires, and subsequent rebuildings; and eventual conversion from military to residential use. What makes Ooidonk different is the care and the respect for history with which the last few stages of restoration and renovation were performed. In the mid-19th century the castle was bought by the ancestors of the current owner, who hired a well-regarded architect and gave him the instruction to give the castle modern facilities while keeping the rennaissance feel. He did an excellent job, and so the castle appears largely as it did after the last major remodeling in 1592: a Flemish rennaissance palace with Spanish accents.
The Castle of Ooidonk may be toured on limited days each year; its gardens are open much more frequently.
