The Park du Cinquantenaire was commisioned by the Belgian monarch Leopold II to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Belgian Independence, in 1888.
The principle monument of the Parc du Cinquantenaire is the Palace du Cinquantenaire, a massive, multifaceted building with wings that contain individual museums, joined by an arcade. The museums are the Royal Museum of the Army, the Museum of the Fiftieth Anniversary, and the Autoworld Exhibition.
