Bishop is located northeast of Bakersfield between Mammoth Lakes and Big Pine along US Highway 395 on the banks of the Owens River near the Nevada state line.

Cattlemen and sheepherders used the valley as a grazing area while passing on to other destinations. By 1912, celery, potatoes, alfalfa, wheat and corn were grown here.
