The Golden Gate is a steep sided channel at the entrance of
San Francisco Bay. The Golden Gate Bridge spans the harbor opening. It is one of the largest and most spectacular suspension bridges in the world, completed in 1937 at a cost of $35,500,000. The huge towers of the bridge are among the first structures seen from ships as they approach. They stand on either side of the bridge, supporting the 36.5 inch steel cables that carry the weight of the bridge.
The six lanes of traffic on Highway 101 connect San Francisco to Marin County and points north.
