Interstate 5

Search Visit California

The only continuous north-south Interstate through California, Interstate 5 has largely superseded Highway 99. Entering California from Oregon near Yreka, it follows the Sacramento River through Redding and into Sacramento. South of Sacramento, Interstate 5 takes a course west of Highway 99, sometimes only by a few miles. At Stockton, Interstate 5 and Highway 99 both cross within the city limits. From here, the interstate follows the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, avoiding major urban areas, and rejoining Highway 99 south of Bakersfield. It crosses the mountains into Los Angeles and continues south through Greater Orange County, San Diego and ends at the Mexican border at Tijuana.
