The museum interprets San Diego's history during the Spanish and Mexican periods. Exhibits include artifacts from archeological excavations at the Presidio site. The museum stands above the site of the 18th-century presidio and Father Junipero Serra's mission, the first of the Spanish Missions.

The museum is closed Mondays, New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
