Mountain View Public Library, serving an area of 72,000 residents, has a collection of 270,000 books and periodicals; in addition, there are 12,000 CDs, records, cassettes and other audio materials, as well as 6,000 video items, such as DVDs and VHS tapes. Internet terminals are available for use by the general public.

Staffing consists of 56 employees, of whom 18 are fully accredited librarians, plus volunteers. The system comprises one central library, plus one bookmobile. Annual expenditures on the library collection total $360,000. Patrons make 540,000 visits annually, and check out materials 880,000 times. Thirty-two percent of all check-outs are children's materials.

All year Satellite Wagering, Waterworld USA, Paradise Island Fun Center and an RV Park are just a few of the features of the Cal Expo.The first State Fair was held in 1854 in San Francisco at the old Music Hall. The fair offered premiums (prizes) for its competitions and included such agricultural exhibits such as 2-inch-long peanuts, 72-pound beets and a 10-pound carrot that was longer than 3 feet. Horseracing was part of that first fair and has continued to be a part of the fair ever since.
