Sarah Winchester, the eccentric heiress to the Winchester Arms fortune, built this Victorian mansion with the intent of baffling the evil spirits that haunted her. Construction of the house lasted throughout her lifetime, only ceasing with her death.
The mansion has 160 rooms, 2000 doors, 13 bathrooms, 10,000 windows, 47 fireplaces, blind closets, secret passageways, and 40 staircases.
Guided tours of the mansion last just over an hour. Also on the estate are the Winchester Historic Firearms Museum and Winchester Products Museum, which features items produced in the 1920s by a subsidiary of the Winchester Repeat Arms Co.
The house is open daily except for Christmas.
