Las Animas flourishes as a trading center for the stock ranches and irrigated farms of the surrounding high plains and as a destination for vacationers at John Martin Reservoir. Two murals highlighting the Western heritage of the Santa Fe Trail can be seen from Hwy 50. Las Animas is east of Pueblo on Hwy 50. Horse Creek Reservoir and Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site are nearby.
