Derby is located in New Haven County west of New Haven between Seymour and Shelton along US Highway 8 on the banks of the Housatonic River near Indian Well State Park. Osborne-Dale State Park is also nearby.

Derby is at the junction of the Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers. Community was named for Derby, England.

Derby was settled in 1642 as a trading post.

Local attractions include: Indian Well State Park, Housatonic River, Osbornedale State Park, Shelton Reservoir, Ansonia Reservoir, and Means Brook Reservoir.
